Apart from his great sense of humor, Jaap Ham had a great musical impact on the band. He had played in numerous bands and orchestras in and around Enkhuizen, and was at the time a music teacher and conductor of KSM,one of the local brassbands of Enkhuizen. Still the sextet missed a typical old style jazz instrument, the trombone, as Dick Degeling had left the band on 15 November 1981. Leo Haemels was playing in the Freetime Street Paraders, the street orchestra of the Freetime Old Dixie Jassband, and there he met Sam Verbeek, a student of Rob Vlam, the trombone player in the Freetime. Leo invited Sam to join the Old Fashioners and on Saturday 19 June 1982 he played for the first time with the band in jazzcafe Du Passage in Enkhuizen.

In 1982 it got a bit noisy in the rythm section of the band, and Henk Kluppel on drums was replaced by Jan de Jong.
